fortunetelling
DEFINITIONS
Fortunetelling: The ability to predict a person’s future. The term is often equated with divination, but there is a difference. Divination assumes that we have the ability to change and create our own futures—we can alter what may be indicated. Fortunetelling, however, implies as fixed future—fate—that cannot be improved, avoided, or changed. Although more and more people have abandoned the concept of a fixed fate—and thus use “divination” rather than “fortunetelling”—many people still use “fortunetelling” to describe all of the divinatory arts, including Tarot, Runecasting, tea leaf reading, palmistry, etc.
